Avalon Gardens Elementary STEAM Academy first opened its doors in 1952. It is located in a residential and commercial neighborhood in South Los Angeles. Avalon Gardens Elementary is in the Gardena Family of Schools. It feeds into Peary Middle School and Gardena High School. Avalon Gardens Elementary is a small school.

Avalon Gardens participates in the Gifted and Talented Educated Program (GATE). The school operates on a single track on a traditional nine-month calendar and provides services for 230 students in grades Pre-K through sixth grade. The school has been identified as a PHBAO (Primarily Hispanic, Black, Asian and Other) school. The instructional day is from 8:01 a.m to 2:30 p.m. There are total of seven moderate to severe Special Day classes. Eight general education classes, and a Resource Specialist Program.

100% of the students at Avalon Gardens Elementary qualifies for the Free or Reduced Lunch Program under Provision 1. 85% are classified socioeconomically Disadvantaged. 54% of the students are African American. 43% are Hispanic, and less than 1% each are White or Asian. The school's demographics have been stable for the past two years.

Los Angeles Unified School District-Beyond the Bell supervises two after school programs. Youth Services and the Youth Development Program. Youth Services is a permissive recreation program available to students who are capable of independent supervision to and from the school site. The Youth Development Program provides free academic enrichment, homework assistance, and recreational activities. The after-school programs services students from dismissal to 6 p.m.

Avalon Gardens Elementary School was selected by the Los Angles Unified District as an integrated site because of the close proximity to Banneker Special Education Center. The recently implemented integration program which began in 2014 is designed to promote positive interaction between students with disabilities and their non-disabled peers. Students participate in dance, music, theater, music, visual arts, physical education and library studies on a weekly basis. They also attend assemblies, field trips, and special events together.

In 2014, Avalon Gardens Elementary received recognition from the state of California as a Title 1 Academic Achievement Award School.

Avalon Gardens will ensure that all students engage in rigorous, relevant educational experiences in a safe, equitable, and nurturing environment based on the Common Core State Standards that meet their individual needs to successfully fulfill A-G requirements and the demands of college and career readiness in the 21st Century.
